People with Parkinson’s disease move smaller and slower than normal, causing them problems with clothing and many other activities. FAST and BIG movement rehabilitation programs have been shown to encourage patients to produce larger movements with positive effects on motor skill and quality of life.
We developed TOAP Run, a serious video game to support this perception and provide “BIG and FAST movement” therapy. In a preliminary trial, the game has been shown to reduce the incidence of falls in most patients, and a subsequent larger trial is underway.
The player evolves in a colorful 3D environment in which he works with unbalanced postures, often complicated for people with Parkinson's disease, such as lateral movements, lunges, trunk twists and extensions. These movements allow the patient to progress and gain amplitude and thus improve the walking movement throughout the sessions without him noticing! For this, the game multiplies visual, sound and cognitive requests to encourage the patient to excel and improve their score.
"Assessment" module:
In addition to game data, data is collected thanks to various tests (see tab "monitored clinical data") to analyze the patient's motor skills in terms of amplitude, speed of execution, acceleration of the patient. Movement and mainly to measure its evolution over time.
Project financing
TOAP Run was developed within the scope of the REHAB e-NOVATION project, winner of the Global Innovation Logo Inv Av 2030 Contest. This project was therefore supported by the Investments for the Future Program.
This award allowed for the first feasibility and acceptability study of the game to be carried out, the results of which were very encouraging. In 2016, the project won a new European Call for Proposals, the Eurostars (Horizon 2020), which allows to continue the study on the clinical effectiveness of the game in patients on a European scale.
